Mynydd Rhyd Ddu

The walk up Mynydd Rhyd Ddu rewards effort with proper panoramic views across the Vale of Clwyd. It's not a difficult hike - most people manage it in under two hours from the base - but it's steep enough to make you work for the views. The summit sits at around 620 metres, modest by Welsh standards, yet the vantage point feels commanding. On clear days you can see right across to the Clwydian Range itself.

Walkers and hill enthusiasts will get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll, and families with young children might find the climb tiresome without proper breaks. The path is reasonably well-defined but can be boggy higher up, so waterproof boots aren't optional - they're essential. Allow three hours if you're going at a steady pace and want time to stand around taking photos.

Ruthin, just four miles away, makes a sensible base for tackling this peak. The town has pubs, a decent café or two, and you can grab supplies before heading out. If you're staying at nearby Clwydian Glamping Pods and Campsite, you're perfectly positioned - it's only a short drive to the trailhead.

Go on a decent weather day. A grey, drizzly morning won't kill you, but visibility matters here. The views are the whole point, and you'll regret climbing it in mist. Late spring or early autumn work well - you'll avoid summer crowds and get better light.
