Nant-y-fuach Rock Shelter

A short scramble up a wooded hillside brings you to this modest rock shelter - more of a sandstone overhang than a proper cave, but worth the diversion if you're walking in the Conwy area anyway. The shelter itself is perhaps six metres deep, enough to stand upright under the rock face and feel genuinely prehistoric for five minutes. Bronze Age folk sheltered here, which is the sort of thing that sticks with you when you're standing in the same spot.

It's the kind of place that works best for walkers exploring the broader landscape rather than a destination in itself. Kids might enjoy the scramble up and the novelty of squeezing into a 'cave', though there's nothing to do once you're there - no interpretation panels, no facilities. You could spend ten minutes maximum poking around the rock face and examining the ground. The views back towards Rhyl are decent enough if the weather cooperates.

Getting here requires a reasonable walk from Nant-y-fuach itself through woodland, and the path can be boggy after rain. Trainers are fine but don't expect it to be straightforward. It's free, obviously - just a slice of landscape. If you're based at Golden Sands Holiday Park for a week and fancy a proper leg-stretch with a bit of historical interest, this fits nicely into a morning's walking. On its own though? It's a brief curiosity rather than a reason to plan a trip.
