Napton Marina

The Oxford Canal cuts through flat Warwickshire farmland, and Napton Marina sits right where the water widens into something almost proper. It's a working boatyard really - not the kind of place you turn up expecting manicured gardens and a gift shop. What you get instead is genuine canal life: narrowboats being repaired, people mucking about with ropes and diesel engines, the occasional heron waiting for fish.

You can walk along the towpath for free, which is the whole point. It's dead easy terrain, pancake-flat, so families with young kids or anyone not keen on hills will find it manageable. The Marina itself is best appreciated from the water if you hire a boat, but even on foot you'll see the activity and get a feel for how the canal still functions as actual transport, not just a pretty thing for postcards.

Holt Farm Campsite sits less than two miles away, making this a natural addition to a canal-side holiday. It's the sort of place that rewards a gentle morning stroll rather than a structured visit - you're not paying entry, not racing the clock. Spring and summer are obviously nicer when the water's busy with boats and the towpath's dry, though winter has its own appeal if you like quiet.

Historically minded types might care that this stretch of canal opened in 1790. The locks here are proper Victorian engineering. It's not dramatic, but it's real, which is more than you can say for some attractions.
