National Lobster Hatchery

The National Lobster Hatchery sits right on Padstow's harbour, which immediately makes it worth a look if you're staying anywhere nearby. It's a working facility, not some polished theme park - you're watching actual lobster larvae being reared and prepared for release into the wild. The tanks are surprisingly engaging. You'll see creatures at every stage from tiny planktonic specks to proper-sized lobsters ready to go back to the sea, and there's something oddly compelling about watching them move about.

Kids seem to get the most out of it, especially if they're into creatures that aren't cuddly or fluffy. The educational side is handled well without being preachy. You'll leave knowing more about how commercial fishing actually works than you did before. Adults who like a bit of marine biology will find it worthwhile too, though I'd reckon 45 minutes to an hour is the realistic length of a visit - it's not massive.

The real advantage is location. You're in Padstow anyway, probably, either because you're staying at Dennis Cove Campsite or one of the other parks dotted around the area, or because you've come for the restaurants and beaches. The hatchery slots perfectly into a harbour-side hour between lunch and a walk. It's free to enter, which helps.

Timing-wise, go mid-morning or mid-afternoon to dodge school groups if you can. The harbour walk itself - past the hatchery and along the water - is cracking, whether or not you go inside.
