National Memorial Arboretum (Alrewas, Staffordshire)

The National Memorial Arboretum sits just outside Burton-on-Trent, and it's a sobering, thoughtful experience rather than a cheerful day out. You're walking through 150 acres of woodland planted with thousands of trees, each one dedicated to someone who's died in service or conflict. It hits differently than you'd expect.

There are formal gardens, quiet clearings, and memorials scattered throughout - some monumental, others intimate. The Japanese Garden of Peace is particularly moving, and the Armed Forces Memorial itself is impossible to ignore. You can easily spend two to three hours here, more if you're reading the dedications. Walkers appreciate the network of paths, though it's not strenuous. Families bring children, and it works as an educational space - kids understand the weight of it without needing everything explained.

Admission is free, which feels right for somewhere this important. The visitor centre has a café and facilities. Go on a weekday if you want peace and space to think. Weekends fill up quickly. The arboretum sits well within a Staffordshire park holiday - you could easily combine it with Kingfisher Holiday Park, which is only a couple of miles away, then explore the broader Burton area.

It's not a typical attraction you tick off a list. People either feel moved by it or feel slightly out of place. Either way, it's worth the detour.
