National Trust - Castle Drogo

You'll spot Castle Drogo's granite towers rising dramatically from the moorland west of Exeter, impossible to miss once you know it's there. This National Trust property is a proper oddity - a 20th-century castle built by an eccentric Plymouth millionaire who fancied himself a medieval lord. The architect Edwin Lutyens designed it between 1910 and 1930, creating something that looks genuinely ancient but smells unmistakably of fresh stone and deliberate fantasy.

Inside, you get period rooms, a functioning kitchen garden, and views across the Teign Valley that justify the walk up from the car park. History buffs will spend a solid two hours picking through the design choices and construction stories. Families with younger kids might manage an hour before the castle fatigue sets in - it's not crawling with interactive exhibits, and the grounds, while pleasant, aren't adventure playground material.

Admission is charged for National Trust members and visitors alike. Allow three to four hours if you're doing the full circuit including the estate walks. Winter visits can feel atmospheric but bleak; spring brings the garden properly alive.
