About National Trust - Hardcastle Crags

The steep wooded valley carves itself into the landscape just a few miles from Hebden Bridge, and it's immediately clear why the National Trust bothered protecting it. Hardcastle Crags is a proper gorge - babbling water, towering rock faces, and the kind of woodland that makes you forget you're in West Yorkshire. The walking is the thing here. There's a main path that winds along the stream, manageable enough for families with older kids, though it does get boggy after rain and the slopes either side are genuinely steep. The best bit is Gibson Mill at the head of the valley - a restored textile mill that tells you something about what actually went on in these valleys before they got romantic. The building itself is free to wander past, though there's sometimes an admission charge inside if they've got an exhibition running. Allow two to three hours for a decent walk and a poke about, longer if you're in no rush. Winter is moody and atmospheric, but summer weekends pull crowds who park badly all the way back to Hebden Bridge. Go midweek if you can. If you're camping at Old Chamber just down the road, you're on to a proper winner - it's fifteen minutes' drive or a decent walk through the surrounding countryside. The whole area opens up from here: it's the kind of place where you can string together a week of valley walks without repeating yourself, and the moorland beyond has views that stretch for miles when the weather plays ball.
