National Trust - Rayleigh Mount

A Norman motte and bailey sits in the middle of Rayleigh, rising about 80 feet above the surrounding Essex flatland. This is what remains of a 11th-century castle, and while there's not much to see beyond the earthworks themselves, the walk up is brisk and the views across the town justify the climb.

You're essentially walking up a grass-covered hill dotted with trees. The summit is open and windswept - on a clear day you can see a fair distance across Essex, which for these parts is genuinely impressive. The National Trust maintains the site, and it's free to visit with no set opening hours, so you can rock up whenever.

History buffs will get a kick out of seeing how these Norman defences were built, and the site cards explain the archaeology without overdoing it. Kids will enjoy the scramble up, though there's nothing interactive here - it's pure landscape archaeology. Families based at Essex Glamping, just a couple of miles away near Benfleet, could easily make this a casual half-hour detour on a day out rather than a dedicated trip.

Allow 20 minutes to explore properly. Go on a decent weather day when the views actually reward the effort. You won't spend hours here, but it's a proper slice of Norman England without the crowds or entry fees.
