National Trust Shugborough Estate

The stable block at Shugborough is where you'll find the real story of this place. Not the grand house itself, but the servants' quarters - a working museum that shows you exactly how the other half lived in the 18th century. You can walk through the kitchens, the laundry, the brewhouse, and actually understand what it took to run an estate like this. It's properly fascinating.

The house itself is handsome enough, but honestly the gardens are what justify the trip. There's a Chinese House, a Tower of the Winds, and a lengthy walk through genuine parkland - the sort of place you can lose an afternoon without trying. Kids will either love the scale of it or get restless after an hour, depending on their age and temperament.

It's free to wander the grounds and gardens, though the house and museum buildings require paid admission. From Stafford, it's less than three miles south, making it an easy morning or afternoon break from a park-based holiday. Canalside Camping and The White Lodge are both within a mile, so you could camp nearby and use Shugborough as a base day out.

Best in spring or early autumn when it's not rammed with school groups. Allow three to four hours if you're doing the full house and gardens. The working farm gives you something to do in between buildings, which breaks up the day nicely. Bring decent shoes - there's proper walking involved.
