National Trust - South Foreland Lighthouse

The twin towers of South Foreland rise from the cliffs just outside Dover like something from a Cornish postcard, except you're in Kent and the light's hitting the white stonework in a way that makes photographers lose their minds. This is proper working lighthouse territory - the National Trust maintains it, and inside you get the full story: the spiral staircase up to the lamp room, the Victorian engineering that still does the job, the views across the Channel that justify the climb even if your legs disagree halfway up.

It's very much a history-and-views attraction rather than a sprawling destination. Most people spend 45 minutes to an hour here, though if you're into maritime heritage or Victorian mechanics you could easily stretch it to two. The cliffside location means walkers absolutely should build it into a longer coastal route - the South Foreland to Deal stretch is genuinely good. Families with younger kids sometimes find the lighthouse itself a bit of a let-down once they've made the climb, so realistic expectations help.

Stay at St Margaret's Bay Holiday Park just down the road - less than a mile away - and you're perfectly positioned for this and the wider Dover coast. Hawthorn Farm is a couple of miles inland if you prefer a bit more space between you and the cliffs. The lighthouse pairs well with Dover Castle and the town's seafront for a proper history-heavy long weekend rather than a full-week base. Summer's best, obviously, though winter storms across the Channel have their own drama if you don't mind grey skies.
