Thorington Hall sits quietly in the Suffolk countryside east of Colchester, a timber-framed Tudor manor that's been in National Trust hands for decades. It's the sort of place that rewards a proper wander around the gardens and grounds rather than a quick tick-off - the building itself is striking with its period details, but honestly, the real draw is getting a feel for how landed gentry actually lived, away from the tourist masses.

Historia buffs will find plenty to chew on here. The hall's got genuine Tudor bones and you can see how rooms have been adapted and lived in across centuries. That said, it's not a grand spectacle - expect quiet, intimate spaces rather than vast state rooms. Kids under ten might flag after 45 minutes unless they're keen on trailing around old houses.

Allow a couple of hours to do it justice, especially if the gardens are open. The admission situation varies by season - check the Trust's website before you go, as opening hours aren't fixed year-round.

It fits brilliantly into a wider Suffolk stay. The nearby caravan parks - Polstead Country Park and The Huts at Woodthorpes are both excellent - give you a solid base for exploring the area without being overrun. Rushbanks Farm and Ardleigh are equally decent if you want something slightly closer to Colchester itself.
