National Trust - Woodchester Park

The valley floor here is properly wild - water meadows and woodland spread out beneath steep limestone slopes, and you'll understand immediately why the National Trust bothers protecting it. Woodchester Park sits just south of Stroud and feels genuinely removed from the Cotswold bustle, despite being only a few minutes' drive away.

You're here to walk. There's no grand house or manicured gardens, just open countryside with a network of footpaths threading through abandoned parkland that's slowly being reclaimed. On wet days the whole place turns boggy and interesting. The Stroudwater Canal cuts through, and if you're lucky you'll spot herons along the water meadows. Walkers get the most out of this - serious ones doing longer loops, but equally parents after a gentler afternoon stroll with kids who like splashing about in streams.

The reserve is free to access and you can spend anything from ninety minutes to half a day here depending on which paths you take. Spring and early summer are best when the wildflowers are up. Winter's atmospheric in a darker way. Weekday mornings are quieter than weekends, which makes a difference.

It works brilliantly as part of a broader walking holiday from one of the nearby campsites - Tobacconist Farm and Gables Farm are both close enough for a base. You could combine it with walks around Symonds Yat or the Forest of Dean if you're after a full Gloucestershire rambling trip. Don't expect attractions or facilities. Bring decent boots and respect the mud.
