Nescliffe Hill Kynaston Cave

The walk up Nescliffe Hill rewards you with proper views across the Shropshire-Powys border, and the real draw here is Kynaston Cave tucked into the hillside. It's a modest limestone cavern - nothing that'll keep you transfixed for hours, but it's the sort of spot that makes a decent half-day outing from Oswestry, especially if you're camped at Cranberry Moss or Royal Hill just down the road.

You'll scramble up a fairly steep woodland path to reach it. The cave itself sits about 60 metres up the slope and opens into a rocky shelter rather than a dramatic underground chamber. Local history types will find it interesting - there's medieval occupation evidence here, and it's got that sense of people having sheltered in this exact spot centuries ago. The views back down the valley aren't bad either, though it's hardly a destination in itself.

Walkers with decent boots will enjoy the ascent and descent more than families with toddlers, frankly. You're looking at an hour's gentle walk there and back, depending on how long you linger in the cave itself. It works well as part of a broader Shropshire ramble rather than a standalone trip. The cave's free to visit - there's no formal visitor centre or admission fee. Come when it's dry; in wet weather the path gets slick and the cave can feel a bit dripping and claustrophobic.
