Nethan Gorge

The River Nethan cuts through sandstone cliffs in a way that stops you dead when you first glimpse it. This gorge, just outside Lanark, is a proper geological drama - narrow, steep-sided, and genuinely impressive for somewhere in the Lowlands that most people walk past without noticing.

You get down into the gorge itself via a woodland path that's steep enough to warrant proper footwear, especially after rain. The riverbed is strewn with boulders and the water moves fast. On a decent day the light filters through the trees and hits the rock face in that golden, moody way that makes you understand why people got excited about geology in the nineteenth century.

This suits walkers far more than families with small kids. The path down is manageable but not trivial, and there's not much to do once you're there except stand around looking at rocks and water. An hour, maybe ninety minutes, and you've seen it. That said, if you're staying at Ecosse Glamping just across the way, it's absolutely worth the walk - adds proper drama to a local morning out.

Go early or midweek if you want any peace. The gorge gets a fair bit of foot traffic from Lanark, especially weekends. Free to visit, obviously. The real value isn't the destination itself but what it says about the landscape around here - everything's more textured than you'd expect.
