New Coppice

A proper working forest rather than a manicured country estate, New Coppice sits on the edge of Ashurst and feels like locals' territory - which is exactly what makes it worth a visit. The woodland here is actively managed for timber and wildlife, so you'll see freshly cleared sections, young growth pushing through, and paths that change season to season. Walkers get the most from it. The trails wind through mixed woodland with decent length options - nothing too punishing, but enough to feel like you've actually walked somewhere. On a clear day the forest floor is dry and springy underfoot; after rain it's proper boggy in places, so wellies aren't a bad shout.

It's free to wander and works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon outing if you're based at Ashurst Campsite nearby. You won't find facilities or a visitor centre - bring water and a map or download the route beforehand. Kids will get an hour or so of entertainment if they're the type to climb fallen logs and hunt for wildlife; it's not a playground destination. The forest appeals to quiet walkers and photographers more than family groups wanting activities.

Allow two to three hours if you're doing a proper loop. Avoid peak weekends if you value solitude - it's popular with local runners and dog walkers. Spring and early autumn are best for walking comfort and light through the trees. Not a destination in itself, but genuinely worth combining with other New Forest attractions or as a base-camp walk during a campsite stay.
