The woodland around Northwich isn't dramatic or famous, but it's where locals slip away when they need to think. New Plantation is a proper working forest - the kind of place where you're more likely to bump into foresters than tour groups. There's no visitor centre, no café, just trees and the sound of your own footsteps on the paths.

Walking here feels honest. The Cheshire sandstone beneath your feet gets exposed in places, and the mix of conifers and broadleaves means the light changes constantly as you move through. You won't find dramatic vistas or Instagram moments, but you will find space. It's ideal for people who actually want to walk rather than perform a walk - the sort who don't mind if a path is muddy or unmarked.

Bring proper boots and don't expect signposting to be thorough. Allow at least two hours if you want to explore properly; it's the kind of place that rewards wandering rather than rushing through.
