Newborough National Nature Reserve and Forest

Two and a half thousand acres of dune woodland and salt marsh on Anglesey's southwest coast - Newborough is one of those places that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick visit. You get forest trails threading through Corsican pines planted in the 1940s, open grassland where you can actually see for miles, and if you time it right, mudflats that pull in serious numbers of wading birds. It's genuinely wild feeling, not manicured. The reserve sits next to Newborough Beach, which is substantial and sandy, so you could easily spend half a day here without running out of things to do.

Walkers will get the most from this. The forest paths are straightforward enough - nothing technical - but there's enough distance to justify the trip. Birdwatchers should come at migration season; winter brings visiting species that make the drive from Llanfairpwllgwyngyll feel worthwhile. Families with young kids might find the initial forest walk interesting, though there's not much hands-on activity, so don't expect to fill a whole afternoon.

It's free to access, and there's no time limit - you can stay as long as the light holds. Early morning is quieter and better for wildlife. If you're based at one of the local caravan parks - Coed Helen or Morfa Lodge are within forty minutes - this works perfectly as a half-day excursion alongside beach time. Bring proper walking boots; it gets boggy after rain. The nearest facilities are back in town, so plan accordingly.
