Newlands Wood

The woodland stretches thick and ancient just outside Maidstone, and Newlands Wood delivers exactly what it promises - proper forest walking without the pretence. Tall oaks and beeches create a decent canopy, the sort of place where you can actually lose the sound of traffic after a few minutes. The paths are well-trodden but not overcrowded, which matters.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after forty minutes - there's no playground or water feature to break things up, just trees and more trees. But if you've got teenagers who'll actually walk without complaining, or you're after a proper leg-stretcher, it's worth the trip from Maidstone town centre.

The wood works well as a morning excursion if you're staying at Bearsted Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road - only 1.2 miles away, so zero faff. Chegworth Mill Glamping is slightly further at 2.1 miles but still an easy call. Plan on two to three hours if you're taking the main loops at a decent pace. No facilities that I'm aware of, so take water.

It's free, which is always lovely, and there's no real reason not to visit if you're in the area. Not life-changing, but solid woodland with enough space to actually breathe. Go early morning if you can - the light filters through differently and you'll see more wildlife.
