Newton Gill Plantation

A thick belt of conifers and mixed woodland just south of Leyburn, Newton Gill Plantation is the sort of place locals know and visitors stumble upon by accident. It's proper forest - dark enough under the canopy that the light changes noticeably when you step inside, with tracks that wind through fir and larch in a way that feels almost Scandinavian if you squint.

What you're doing here is walking. There's no café, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards. Just trees and paths and the chance to stretch your legs without crowds. The plantation feels oldest and most atmospheric deeper in, where the floor goes soft with needles and the sound changes entirely. It's the sort of place that appeals to people who actually like forests - walkers, photographers, anyone after an hour's peace with nothing but birdsong. Kids who want a proper adventure rather than a playground will get something out of it; kids who need facilities won't.

Give yourself ninety minutes if you're exploring the main trails without rushing. There's no admission charge as far as I can tell - it's essentially open access woodland. Spring's lovely when the light gets lower again after winter, though autumn brings better colours if you're after a moody woodland walk.

If you're based at Eastfield Glamping Farm down the road, this is an ideal early-morning option before the day gets busy. It pairs well with Wensleydale's bigger attractions without the drive elsewhere.
