Newton Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Newton Wood sits just outside Mintlaw and gives you exactly what it says on the tin - trees, paths, and fresh air. The forest floor is soft underfoot, the canopy decent even in winter, and it's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think instead of battling crowds.

Walkers will get the most from it. Families with young kids might manage an hour before boredom sets in, unless they're the type to get genuinely excited about spotting birds or finding interesting sticks. There's nothing flashy here - no visitor centre, no facilities that I could find, no entry fee as far as I know. Just walk in and get on with it.

The real value is as a break between Aden Caravan & Camping or AC/DC Glamping during a park-based holiday in Aberdeenshire. If you're staying at either site and need to stretch your legs without driving anywhere, Newton Wood does the job without fuss. It's close enough to Mintlaw for supplies but far enough away to feel like you've actually left things behind.

Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're not rushing. Go early morning for the best chance of wildlife and quieter paths. Winter's just as good as summer here - fewer midges, for one thing.
