Nicholas Everitt Park

The walk through Nicholas Everitt Park, just east of Lowestoft, takes you along proper Suffolk wetland - reedy marshes, open water, and the sort of light that changes every ten minutes depending on what the clouds are doing. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured park, which means you get genuine habitat here: wading birds, dragonflies in summer, and if you're lucky, the odd otter nosing about in the dykes.

This is squarely a spot for walkers and birdwatchers. Bring binoculars and expect to spend an hour minimum if you're serious about spotting anything. Families with young kids might find it a bit slow unless they're genuinely interested in wildlife - there's not much to do except walk and look. The paths are mostly flat and manageable, though muddy patches are inevitable after rain, so proper boots matter.

It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though spring and autumn are peak times for migrating birds. Winter brings fewer visitors, which can be oddly peaceful. If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Pakefield is barely two miles away, with Broadland Sands and Haven Hopton also close by - this makes a solid half-day outing that breaks up the usual seaside routine.

The reserve isn't going to blow your mind with dramatic scenery, but it's a genuine working nature space that feels honest rather than designed for Instagram. If you want Norfolk and Suffolk wetlands without the crowds of the bigger reserves, it's well worth the detour.
