Nore Barn Woods near Emsworth is one of those places that creeps up on you. You're wandering through fairly standard Hampshire woodland, then suddenly you're in something altogether older and more interesting. The trees here have proper character - gnarled and twisted - and the paths wind through what feels like genuine countryside rather than managed parkland.

It's the kind of spot walkers actually appreciate. Not dramatic, not trying to impress you with views or heritage plaques, just solid woodland with decent footpaths. You'll see bluebells if you time it right in spring. The canopy's thick enough that it's cool even on warm days. Allow an hour to two hours depending on which route you fancy - this isn't a quick circuit.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after thirty minutes or so. Older walkers and anyone who likes a proper woodland trudge will get proper value from it. The ground can be muddy, particularly after rain, so decent boots are worth packing.

It sits nicely within reach of the holiday parks scattered around Emsworth - Mill Rythe Coastal Village and Hayling Island Holiday Park are both close enough that you could walk or drive easily. Combine it with a coastal walk rather than treating it as a destination in itself. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as part of a wider ramble rather than a standalone trip. Worth the detour if you're already in the area.
