North Hawkwell Wood

The woods around Minehead aren't flashy, but they're proper good for a walk if you're staying at one of the nearby parks. North Hawkwell Wood sits just inland from the coast, offering that mix of tall trees and open glades that makes for a decent couple of hours on foot. The canopy's thick enough to keep things cool even on warmer days, and the soil's soft underfoot - easy going compared to the moorland you'll find higher up in Exmoor.

It's the sort of place where walkers will actually enjoy themselves. The woodland paths meander without being overly complicated, making it fine for families with kids who don't need constant stimulation. Bring a packed lunch and you've got an easy half-day sorted. If you're after something more ambitious, this makes a natural warm-up before heading into the Exmoor proper, which looms just beyond.

The real draw here is convenience rather than drama. You're minutes from Minehead itself, which means if you're based at either Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Butlins Minehead, you can be under the trees without faffing about with a long drive. The woodland doesn't demand much - no entry fees that we can find, no visitor centre, no cafe - just trees and paths. That honesty is rather refreshing. Go early or late in the day if you want the place to yourself. Peak summer afternoons can get a bit busy with locals.
