North Holme Wood

Dense woodland edges right up to the market town of Northallerton - it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than deliberately seek out, which is part of its charm. North Holme Wood offers proper forest walking without the crowds you'd get at somewhere more famous. The trees are thick here, paths wind through with enough dappled light to feel genuinely peaceful rather than gloomy.

It's ideal for people who want a proper woodland walk - hikers will find it satisfying rather than challenging. The ground can be muddy after rain, which keeps school parties and very young kids away (their loss). Walkers from Northallerton often pop in for an hour or two between other local errands, which tells you something about the vibe - useful rather than spectacular.

There's no visitor centre or facilities as far as I could tell, so bring what you need. The wood works brilliantly as a breather if you're basing yourself at nearby Whorlton Pods - it's close enough for a morning or afternoon slot without eating up half your day. Hard to say if it's free or if there's a nominal fee, but nothing about the place suggests barriers or ticketing.

Walkers get the most from North Holme Wood. Families with young kids after a quick splash about in streams will find it decent. If you're after dramatic views or rare plants, look elsewhere. But if you want to remember what a proper English wood actually feels like - earthy, quiet, normal - this does the job.
