North Side Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist trap, North Side Wood sits just outside Sturminster Newton and gives you what you'd expect from a Dorset forest - ancient oaks, dappled light filtering through the canopy, and enough peace to actually hear yourself think. There's no visitor centre or café, which is rather the point. You're essentially wandering through working woodland where the main activity is following the paths and spotting what the seasons throw at you.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby campsites - Starlight Glamping, Sunnyhill Campsite, Long Hazel Park, or Hadspen Glamping are all within striking distance. Families with young kids might manage an hour here before restlessness sets in, but proper walkers will appreciate the breathing room. The woodland's particularly good in autumn when the light turns golden and the ground's thick with leaf litter.

Honestly, don't go expecting dramatic vistas or rare birds. This isn't a destination in itself. What it is, though, is a genuinely useful escape if you're spending a week in the area and want to burn off some energy without heading to one of the more famous spots. Free access, no time limits, no crowds - that's the appeal. Wear decent shoes because the paths can get muddy, and go early if you want any chance of solitude.
