North Slip

There's a surprising stretch of woodland just outside Dorchester that most visitors miss entirely. North Slip is one of those proper Dorset forests where you can actually breathe - no crowds, no visitor centre with overpriced coffee, just trees and the occasional dog walker.

It's ideal for a proper forest ramble rather than a destination in itself. The paths wind through decent-sized woodland with enough variety to keep you going for a good couple of hours without feeling repetitive. Not mountainous terrain - this is Dorset after all - but the ground's uneven enough that you'll feel like you've done something by the end.

Families with young kids might find an hour enough before the novelty wears off, unless they're the type who get endlessly fascinated by moss and logs. Older children and proper walkers will get more from it. The woodland does what woodland does - it's green, it's quiet, and on a grey Dorset day it feels rather atmospheric.

If you're staying at somewhere like Green Valley Yurts and Cabin nearby, you could easily pop out here for a morning walk without it feeling like a major excursion. It's the sort of place to slot into a broader day exploring the area rather than plan a trip around specifically.

The real value is the ease of access and the total lack of commercial faffing about. Free to wander, straightforward to park, and you won't queue for anything. Go on a weekday if you can - weekend mornings bring the regular lot out.
