North Yorkshire Moors Railway

The steam whistles alone are worth the trip. North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs vintage trains through some of the loveliest countryside in the region, connecting Pickering with Goathland and beyond - the same route that doubled as Hogsmeade station in the Potter films, though that's frankly the least interesting thing about it.

You board at Pickering station, which has been lovingly restored, and settle into carriages that actually feel like you've stepped back in time rather than into a theme park. The journey climbs steadily through moorland that opens up proper views across North Yorkshire - there's a reason the route was built here. Journeys take around 90 minutes depending on your destination, and you can break the trip at intermediate stops if you want to stretch legs or explore villages like Goathland itself.

It's genuinely excellent for families with children old enough to sit still for a couple of hours - toddlers might find it a slog. Steam enthusiasts will lose their minds. Walkers get real value because you can hop off at different stations and ramble the moors, then catch a later train back.

The railway operates seasonally, running most weekends year-round plus daily services in summer. Book ahead. Pickering itself is compact but useful - a proper market town with cafes and pubs. The caravan parks scattered round the area, especially Swallowtails and Lakeside just outside town, make logical bases for a few nights exploring the moors on foot as well as by rail.
