Northumberlandia viewpoint

You're standing on what looks like a grassy hill, except it isn't a hill at all - it's a 34-metre-high sculpture of a reclining woman, and you're literally walking across her body. Northumberlandia is one of those attractions that sounds utterly bonkers until you see it, then you get why people make the trip.

The viewpoint itself sits near Morpeth and offers proper views across the Northumberland countryside. The real draw is the walk up and across the sculpture itself - you get the strange, wonderful experience of traversing this enormous land art installation while taking in the landscape. It's free to visit, and honestly, twenty minutes is enough unless you're the type who wants to sit about and soak in the view.

Kids quite like it, mainly because the novelty factor is high and it's interactive in a way most viewpoints aren't. Walkers will appreciate it as a detour on a longer route through the area, though it's not a destination that'll occupy you for hours. The best time to visit is when the light's good - either early morning or late afternoon - because the sculpture reads better photographically when the sun's low.
