Norton Wood

Norton Wood sits just outside Newark in Nottinghamshire, a proper working forest that doesn't trade on fairy tales or celebrity status. You get woodland walks through decent-sized trees, paths that range from gentle strolls to proper hikes depending which way you go, and the kind of quiet you can actually hear yourself think in.

It's the sort of place walkers gravitate towards - families with young kids will get a couple of hours out of it before restlessness sets in, but serious hikers or anyone after a long afternoon ramble will find real mileage here. The forest itself isn't manicured or overly managed. Mud is part of the deal, particularly after rain. Spring brings bluebells; autumn delivers proper golden light through the canopy.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Sherwood Castle, The Sherwood Hideaway, or Eastfield Glamping are all within a few miles - Norton Wood works as a decent break from being on site. It's free to access, which beats paying park charges for every activity. Pack wellies regardless of the forecast and give yourself at least two hours if you want to explore properly rather than just dash round in circles.

The real draw here is simplicity. No visitor centre, no café, no admission fees. Just woodland that's actually used by locals, not dressed up for tourists. If that appeals, it's worth the drive from Newark. If you're after playground facilities and themed trails, you'll find that elsewhere.
