Norway Wood

A proper woodland walk just outside Richmond, Norway Wood is the sort of place you head to when you want an hour or two in the trees without the crowds of the Lake District. It's essentially a working forest - coniferous, dense, and genuinely peaceful in a way that surprises you given how close it is to town.

You'll find a network of trails threading through spruce and pine, with the occasional clearing that opens up views across the surrounding countryside. The paths are well-maintained and largely flat, which makes it accessible for families with younger kids, though the ground can be boggy after rain so decent boots matter. There's something quite Scandinavian about the whole place, which explains the name, though it feels very much like Yorkshire woodland.

It works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon break if you're basing yourselves at one of the nearby parks. Kiplin Country Park, just four miles away, and Eastfield Glamping Farm are both solid options for a longer stay - this would slot in nicely as a quieter counterpoint to a day exploring Richmond itself. Allow two to three hours for a proper circuit rather than rushing through.

Walkers will find it genuinely rewarding. Families might spend an hour here and want to move on. History types won't find much, so if you're after castles and heritage, Richmond itself is your draw. The wood is about doing rather than looking - it's the walk itself that matters, not the destination.
