Nurton Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured attraction, Nurton Wood sits just outside Ludlow and delivers the kind of forest experience where you can actually hear yourself think. Ancient trees tower overhead, the ground is soft with decades of leaf matter, and there's a genuine sense of being somewhere wild without needing to trek for hours.

It's ideal for walkers who want a couple of hours in the trees without the crowds you'd find at more famous spots. Families with children old enough to handle uneven terrain will enjoy it; younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first twenty minutes, if I'm honest. The woodland itself requires no special equipment or entry fee - this is the kind of place you simply turn up to and get on with it.

The nearest proper facilities are in Ludlow, a medieval market town about three miles away, which is useful for grabbing supplies or lunch before or after. If you're staying at Orchard Holiday Park or Home Farm Caravan and Campsite - both close enough for a morning visit - Nurton Wood works perfectly as a gentle start to the day. The woodland doesn't demand a full day commitment, which suits a mixed-activity holiday where you might have other plans in the afternoon.

Go early in the day if you want any sense of solitude. The light filtering through in autumn is particularly good. It's not dramatic or Instagram-worthy, but that's rather the point.
