Nymans Gardens

The ruins of a grand Victorian mansion form the heart of Nymans Gardens, near Haywards Heath, and they're genuinely striking - you'll round a corner through the woodland walk and suddenly there it is, all Gothic arches and crumbling stonework. The house burned down in 1947, but rather than demolish it, the owners left the shell standing, which creates this oddly romantic backdrop for exploring what's really one of the South East's most accomplished garden spaces.

What makes it work is the sheer range of planting. There's a walled garden, proper herbaceous borders, specimen trees scattered across the lawns, and woodland areas that feel like they've been here for centuries. Spring's exceptional if you can time it - the magnolias and rhododendrons put on a show - but honestly, there's something to see in every season. You could easily spend two hours here without rushing, and families with older children will find plenty to explore beyond the gardens themselves.

It's a National Trust property, so expect to pay entry, though members get in free. Allow a good half-day if you're visiting from Sunset Tree Camping or Worth Forest Glamping - both just minutes away. The walks are mostly flat and well-maintained, though the site's fairly large so comfortable shoes matter. On a quiet weekday you can have almost the whole place to yourself, which makes the atmospheric ruins feel even more special. Summer weekends get busy, so plan accordingly.
