Oare Gunpowder Works Country Park

There's something properly compelling about walking through a place where Victorian engineers mixed explosives by hand. Oare Gunpowder Works, just outside Faversham, is exactly that - a former industrial site that made the stuff that built the British Empire, and it's still standing as a country park where you can actually see where it all happened.

The works operated from 1764 until 1934, and the layout tells the story better than any museum label could. You walk past the old mills, the mixing houses, the magazines where they stored the powder. It's free to explore - that's the best bit - and the grounds themselves are pleasant enough for a wander, with trees and paths connecting the surviving structures. Allow a couple of hours if you're the type who reads every interpretation board, less if you just fancy a quick poke around.

History buffs will get the most from this. Kids might find it a bit abstract unless they're already interested in industrial heritage, but the open-air setting beats being stuck in a visitor centre. The real appeal is that it's genuinely uncrowded and utterly unpretentious.

It slots well into a Kent coast trip - Faversham itself is worth an afternoon for the creek-side pubs and antique shops, and you're within easy reach of Seasalter Holiday Park or the glamping options scattered around Mount Ephraim if you're based nearby. Go when the weather's decent. There's no cafe, so bring supplies.
