Oceans Church

The tiny whitewashed church sits perched above Bude's clifftops like something out of a postcard someone's actually sent you - not the cheesy kind, but the one that makes you think, right, I'm going there. Oceans Church is a working place of worship that commands one of Cornwall's most dramatic coastal views, and it's absolutely worth the short detour from town.

Inside, it's modest and genuine - no tourist trap theatre here. The building itself dates back centuries, though it's been rebuilt and restored more than once. What matters is standing in the nave and looking out towards the sea. It's the kind of spot that makes you understand why people built churches in these places to begin with.

You'll want maybe twenty minutes, half an hour if you're the contemplative sort. Families with younger kids might find it a bit static unless they're genuinely interested in old churches - the coastal views are the real draw for them, to be honest. Walkers passing through Bude should absolutely work it into their route. The surrounding clifftop footpaths are cracking, and from here you can easily swing down to the town's beaches or push on towards the next headland.

If you're based at Wooda Farm Holiday Park - which is properly excellent and worth the five-star rating - Oceans Church is practically on your doorstep at just over a mile away. Even Atlantic Surf Pods is within easy walking distance. Free admission, no faffing about with opening hours provided you respect that it's a functioning church. Early morning light here is genuinely special.
