Ogof Gan Mwd

Scrambling down through limestone outcrops above Llandudno, you'll find the entrance to this cave system that most visitors to the area never even know exists. Ogof Gan Mwd translates roughly as 'Cave with Mud' - and yes, you'll likely encounter some if you venture inside.

This isn't a tourist cave with guided tours and electric lighting. It's proper caving territory where you need torches, old clothes and a bit of nerve. The main passage extends for several hundred metres into the hillside, with side chambers branching off into darkness. Kids who love adventure will be absolutely thrilled, though parents should know this involves crawling through tight spaces and getting properly muddy.

Serious cavers rate the system for its formations and the challenge of navigating the narrower sections. But even casual explorers can poke around the entrance chamber safely enough. Just bring multiple light sources and tell someone where you're going.

Access is free, as with most wild caves in Wales, though finding it requires a decent walk from the nearest parking. Allow at least two hours if you're planning to explore beyond the entrance. The cave works well as an adventure day out from holiday parks like Hafan y Gogarth or Aberconwy Resort, both within easy striking distance. Best avoided after heavy rain when the 'mud' part of the name becomes all too relevant.
