Old Brick Kiln

Two red brick columns rise from a grassy clearing just outside Watlington, all that remains of what was once a working lime kiln from the 19th century. The Old Brick Kiln is a proper slice of industrial heritage that most people walk straight past without a second glance.

History buffs will appreciate the solid Victorian construction and the insight into how lime was produced for local building projects. The kiln processed chalk from the nearby Chiltern Hills, turning it into the lime mortar that holds together many of Watlington's older buildings. It's atmospheric in its own quiet way, though don't expect interpretation boards or guided tours.

Families might find it a decent stop on a longer walk, but there's not enough here to entertain restless children for more than ten minutes. The surrounding area is pleasant enough for a picnic if you've brought supplies.

Getting there involves a short walk from Watlington's edge - it's clearly visible from the footpath but easy to miss if you're not looking. Free to visit whenever you fancy, though there's no formal parking nearby. It works well as part of a Chilterns walking route, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Swiss Farm or The Chilterns View. Twenty minutes is plenty unless you're particularly keen on Victorian industrial archaeology.
