Old Crow Wood

An hour's walk through Old Crow Wood feels like stepping into a proper forest - the kind with actual depth to it, not a token copse. It's ancient woodland just outside Northallerton, dense enough that you lose sight of the surrounding fields almost immediately. Oak and beech dominate, and in spring the bluebells make it worth timing your visit around April or May.

The woodland isn't manicured. Paths wind through without being paved, which means it suits walkers more than pushchair families - though determined parents with all-terrain kit could manage it. There are fallen trees to clamber over, muddy stretches, and real woodland texture. Kids who like building dens and spotting birds will get a solid couple of hours out of it. Families after something easier might find it a bit much.

Access appears to be free, though information online is sparse - it's one of those places that exists quietly without a visitor centre or café. Best visited after dry weather when the paths aren't utterly treacherous. Allow two to three hours if you're meandering rather than rushing.
