Old Kiln Light Railway

The Old Kiln Light Railway sits just outside Farnham, a proper working museum where you can actually ride on vintage narrow-gauge trains through Surrey woodland. It's not a theme park - it's genuinely run by enthusiasts who've restored these little locomotives and carriages over decades, and you feel that passion the moment you arrive.

The railway itself stretches about a mile through pleasant countryside, and the journey takes roughly 20 minutes. You'll see the old kiln that gave the place its name, plenty of railway heritage bits and pieces scattered about, and if you're lucky, the volunteers will chat your ear off about the engineering. Kids absolutely love it - there's something magnetic about climbing aboard a proper train, even a small one. Adults who remember steam trains or who fancy themselves engineers will find genuine interest here.

There's a small café and a gift shop, though opening times can be a bit variable depending on volunteer availability - worth ringing ahead. Admission is reasonable and the whole experience takes two to three hours if you want to potter about and have a cup of tea.

It slots nicely into a park holiday in the area. You could base yourself at Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat, just 1.4 miles away, then combine a morning here with a walk around Farnham town or the nearby riverside. Little Cowdray Farm Glamping is further out but still accessible. On its own, the railway won't fill a full day, but paired with other local attractions, it's a proper pleasant outing.
