Old Sulehay Forest NR

The woodland paths through Old Sulehay Forest crisscross a genuinely ancient landscape, managed now by the Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve. It's the sort of place where you'll spot woodland birds properly - nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers, the lot - rather than just hoping something interesting flies past. The forest floor is thick with bluebells in spring, which does justify the walk even if the weather's decided to be moody.

Walkers will find it rewarding without being punishing. The trails are straightforward enough that you won't spend half an hour arguing over which path to take, yet there's enough woodland depth to make you feel properly away from Peterborough and the A1. Bring binoculars if you're into birds, or a wildflower guide for late spring. Families with younger legs might find an hour plenty; serious hikers could easily spend the afternoon here and still fancy a pint afterwards.

Access is free, which is the way it should be. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared with water. The nearest proper amenities are back towards Peterborough, though you're well-positioned for the caravan parks dotted nearby - Rockingham Forest Park is barely over a mile away, making this an easy extension to a longer stay. Go on a weekday morning if possible; weekends bring the Peterborough crowd, and the woodland feels less like a proper escape then.
