Walking up to Orkwolf feels like stumbling onto someone's fever dream in the middle of Staffordshire countryside. It's a towering wooden wolf sculpture - genuinely striking, the kind of thing you'd wonder about for weeks after if you saw it from a distance. The structure itself is the whole point: carved timber, detailed enough to catch you off guard, completely incongruous with the flat agricultural landscape around Stafford.

You're not going inside anywhere or buying anything. This is a drive-by landmark, really, though worth getting out of the car for. Takes five minutes to walk around it properly, take the photos, work out why someone built a massive wolf in Staffordshire. Kids will find it a bit mad, which is exactly why they'll remember it. Adults either think it's brilliant or a bit pointless - there's no middle ground.

If you're camping nearby at Fledgling Farm, which is only four miles away, Orkwolf is the sort of random detour that breaks up a drive. Don't plan the day around it, but if you're passing through the area, pull over. It's free, obviously - there's nothing to charge for. Best visited in good light when you can actually see the carving detail. Winter visits feel appropriately moody.

Worth the ten-minute diversion? Yes. Worth driving an hour out of your way? Probably not, unless you're really into unusual public art or collecting photos of oddly-placed landmarks.
