Oswestry Town Museum

The town museum occupies a Victorian building right in Oswestry's centre, and it's one of those places that rewards a proper look around if you're staying locally. Inside, you'll find the sort of collections you'd expect - local archaeology, Victorian artefacts, bits of the town's industrial heritage when it actually mattered economically. The display cases aren't flashy, but they tell a genuine story about how Oswestry developed from a medieval stronghold into a market town that punched above its weight in the 19th century.

It's genuinely free, which takes the sting out of a rainy afternoon. Allow 45 minutes to an hour if you're taking it slowly; you can whip through in 20 if you're not fussed. The opening hours are fairly restrictive - Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10am to 3pm - so you'll need to plan around that. Kids will get something out of it, especially if they're already interested in medieval history or local stories, but it's not a place that'll keep them entertained for hours.

If you're based at Fairhaven Camping, Sweeney Farm, or any of the local holiday parks - Foxtail and Tanat aren't far either - it's well worth an hour in town between other activities. Pop in here, grab a coffee at one of the high street cafes, and you've got a decent morning sorted. It's the sort of small-town museum that works best as part of a broader exploration rather than a destination in itself.
