Otter Cave

The walk down to Otter Cave from the Wye Valley near Chepstow is half the appeal. You're threading through woodland, following the river's tug, before the entrance appears in the limestone cliffs - modest, unassuming, the kind of place you'd miss if you weren't looking properly.

It's a proper cave, dark enough that you'll want a torch, but not so vast or treacherous that kids can't manage it. The cave itself is small-scale - you're not talking Cheddar Gorge dramatics - but there's something oddly satisfying about ducking inside, listening to the water echo off the rock, spotting where otters have left their marks over centuries. Allow an hour for the walk and exploration, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos or moving slowly with younger children.

This one rewards walkers more than casual visitors. If you're after dramatic underground chambers and easy access, you'll be disappointed. But if you like the idea of a genuine wild spot - a cave that hasn't been commercialised, lit, or flattened for tourist convenience - then it's absolutely worth the detour from Chepstow. The riverside path itself is the real draw; the cave is the punctuation mark at the end.
