Out Wood

Out Wood sits just east of Newmarket, a proper slice of ancient woodland that feels miles away from the racing town's hustle. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - mature trees, woodland paths, and enough space to lose the crowds entirely.

The wood itself is relatively compact, which means you won't be trudging about for hours getting nowhere. There's a decent network of paths threading through, good for a solid walk or a gentle wander depending on your mood. The tree canopy is thick, so even on hot days it stays reasonably cool. Autumn's when it really sings - the light filtering through the turning leaves is worth timing a visit for.

This is walker territory, full stop. If you've got small children expecting playgrounds and facilities, you'll be disappointed. But if you want to stretch your legs and actually enjoy some genuine woodland without the National Trust car park circus, it delivers. Dog walkers love it too.

It's free to access, and you can spend anything from 45 minutes to two hours depending on how thoroughly you explore. Early morning is best if you want any sense of solitude.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Piggles Retreat is just down the road at under two miles - Out Wood makes an excellent morning outing before settling back to your accommodation. It's not dramatic or showy, but it's honest woodland and worth the trip if you're actually in the area.
