Out Wood

Out Wood sits just east of Bury Saint Edmunds, a proper working forest that feels pleasantly off the beaten path. It's not a manicured country estate - this is actual forestry with decent walking trails that wind through mixed woodland, the kind of place where you might spot deer if you're quiet and lucky. The paths vary from easy ambles to steeper stretches, and there's genuine peace here, especially midweek when most people are elsewhere.

Walkers will get the most from it. You're looking at between thirty minutes for a quick loop or two hours if you explore properly and dawdle about. The forest is free to access, which is always welcome, though facilities are minimal - no cafe, no gift shop, no crowds. That's rather the point.

It works brilliantly as a pocket of nature during a park holiday at Apple Mount Retreat, just three miles away. The retreat itself is comfortable enough, but Out Wood gives you that proper woodland day out without having to drive far. October through to spring is best - the woods are drier underfoot and you won't be melting. Summer can be muggy between the trees, and honestly, that's when the midges come out.

Kids will either love charging about on the trails or get bored within twenty minutes depending on temperament. Bring a packed lunch, a flask, and decent boots. Leave your phone in your pocket and actually notice where you are.
