Overside Wood

The walk through Overside Wood, just outside Keswick, is one of those Lake District stretches that doesn't make it into the glossy guidebooks. That's rather the point. You're getting proper woodland here - dense, quiet, the sort of place where you actually hear yourself think instead of dodging coach parties.

It's a straightforward forest walk with decent paths that handle wet weather reasonably well, though muddy boots are basically guaranteed. The trees form a decent canopy, so it's a good shout if the weather's being temperamental. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes depending on which route you take and how often you stop to catch your breath on the steeper bits.

Families with kids aged eight and up will get something out of it - there's enough woodland atmosphere to feel like an adventure without requiring serious fitness. Younger children might find it a bit samey. Walkers using Keswick as a base will appreciate it as a warm-up or recovery day walk rather than a main event.

The wood sits handily for those staying at Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club or Castlerigg Hall, both within a couple of miles. If you're after something grander - proper fells and fell-top views - head to Catbells or Blencathra instead. But if you want a honest woodland walk without the crowds, Overside Wood delivers exactly that. No pretence. Just trees and paths.
