Oxenhall Wood

Ancient oaks tower overhead while bluebells carpet the forest floor in spring - this is proper woodland walking territory just outside Ross-on-Wye. The paths wind through mixed woodland that's been here for centuries, offering glimpses of wildlife if you keep quiet and walk slowly.

Families with energetic kids will find plenty to explore, though the terrain can be muddy after rain so decent walking boots are essential. Dog walkers love it here too - lots of space for four-legged friends to stretch their legs safely away from traffic.

Expect to spend a couple of hours if you're doing the full circuit, though you could easily make it a half-day affair with a picnic. The wood feels genuinely wild in places, which is refreshing after some of the more manicured country parks nearby. No facilities though, so come prepared.

It's well positioned for those staying at the nearby holiday parks around Ross-on-Wye. Haywood Farm Caravan and Camping Park is less than a mile away, making this an easy morning walk before breakfast. The other sites like Darnells' Farm Luxury Glamping and Pelerine Caravan & Camping are all within striking distance for a proper woodland adventure. Just the ticket if you want to escape the caravan site for a few hours and get properly lost among the trees.
