Packhorse Bridge Nature Reserve

The Packhorse Bridge Nature Reserve sits just outside Coventry, a proper slice of countryside that sneaks up on you. The whole thing revolves around an ancient packhorse bridge - the sort of thing that's been quietly doing its job for centuries while the world changed around it. You get woodland walks threading through the reserve, and if you time it right, the bird life here is genuinely worth your binoculars.

It's not a vast place, so don't expect to lose yourself for a full day. Two hours is realistic for a decent poke around, maybe three if you're serious about spotting something rare. The paths are manageable for families with older kids, though pushchairs would struggle. History buffs will appreciate the bridge itself - medieval infrastructure just sitting there in the landscape like it's no big deal.

The real win is how close it is to both Somers Wood and Gate Farm caravan parks, both within easy striking distance. If you're basing yourself at either for a week, this makes a cracking morning or afternoon venture without needing to drive far. Spring and autumn are your best bets for wildlife; winter can be muddy and a bit bleak. Summer's pleasant enough but the woodland gets thick with tourists from Coventry.

Free to access, as far as I can tell, though always worth checking locally. Bring proper shoes - the ground gets boggy after rain.
