Palmer's Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a tourist attraction, Palmer's Wood sits just outside Henlow and delivers exactly what you'd want from a Hertfordshire forest - ancient trees, quiet paths, and the kind of peace you won't find in more famous spots. The woodland is genuinely old, with beech and oak standards that tower overhead, creating that cathedral-like feeling. You're walking on soft forest floor, ducking under low branches, occasionally stumbling across a clearing where light floods through. It's not dramatic or manicured. There are no visitor facilities, no café, no interpretation boards. Just forest.

This is squarely a walkers' place. Families might manage an hour here, but restless kids will hit a wall unless they're genuinely interested in spotting woodland birds or looking for fungi. It's ideal if you're based at Henlow Bridge Lakes for a holiday and want to break up the day with something low-key - a two-hour loop that clears your head without requiring much planning. Autumn is lovely here, when the canopy turns gold and you can actually see through the trees rather than being boxed in by summer leaf. Spring's decent too, though the paths get muddy.

Bring proper walking boots. The terrain's not steep but it's uneven, with roots and the occasional boggy patch. There's no charge, no opening hours to worry about - just turn up. Plan on ninety minutes to two hours if you're taking it slowly, which you should.
