Pannanich Hill

The walk up Pannanich Hill from Ballater takes about an hour and rewards you with proper views across Royal Deeside. It's not a slog - the path climbs steadily through woodland before opening out onto moorland with the Cairngorms rolling away to the west. On a clear day you'll see Ben Avon and Lochnagar clearly enough. The hill itself is modest at around 1,200 feet, so it suits families who want a genuine peak without the scramble, and serious walkers often include it in a longer route through the area. The real appeal is how accessible it is from Ballater town centre - you're barely twenty minutes from a coffee shop and back in the valleys. Worth allowing two to three hours if you're not rushing. Go in autumn when the light's golden and the midges have buggered off. Winter can be slippery on the upper sections. This fits nicely into a longer stay at one of the nearby parks. Ballater Caravan Park sits right on the doorstep, while Firbank Park and Howe of Torbeg both make good bases for tackling this and the bigger peaks in the Cairngorms National Park beyond. It's the sort of walk that gets you properly outdoors without eating an entire day - ideal if you've got kids who need feeding or partners who'd rather not be out all afternoon.
