Parc Howard

A proper slice of coastal wetland just outside Swansea, Parc Howard is where you go if you want to actually see something wild without fighting crowds. It's a nature reserve built around old industrial ponds - the kind of place that sounds grim on paper but works brilliantly in reality. Paths wind between water and reedbeds, and if you time it right, you'll spot herons, egrets, and all manner of wading birds going about their business.

The reserve is free to wander, and most people can cover it comfortably in an hour or two depending on how many birds you fancy photographing. It's excellent for families with older kids and serious birdwatchers alike - younger children might find the flat walking easy but could get restless without binoculars and a proper field guide. Early mornings are your best bet for wildlife; afternoons can feel a bit sleepy.

Stay at Gateway Resort or South Wales Touring Park, both within three miles, and you're perfectly placed for a morning here before heading into Swansea proper or exploring the wider Gower Peninsula. The setting's genuinely interesting - industrial heritage turned into something genuinely useful for nature - though don't expect dramatic views or Instagram moments. This is understated conservation work, and that's exactly its appeal. Worth building into a walking itinerary rather than treating as a standalone destination.
